Teddy Roosevelt and the Dogs of War-A Review of Rough Riders: Riders on the Storm Issue #1
Teddy Roosevelt is one of my favorite historical figures; the legend is larger than life. Who else could say speak softly and carry a big stick and be an understatement? If you haven’t read Rough Riders Vol. 1, you are indeed missing out on a masterpiece which brings to live the legends of Teddy Roosevelt, Houdini, Annie Oakley, Jack Johnson, Thomas Edison, Monk Eastman. Rough Riders Vol 1 brought these heroes for a great adventure.
After their last adventure, it seems the Rough Riders have gone their separate ways. Rough Riders: Riders on the Storm picks up three years after the Rough Riders last adventure. We find out real quick that Teddy Roosevelt is Vice President and after an assassination attempt on the president summons the team which has gone in different directions because Shit is about to hit the Fan. Jack Johnson is a boxer ranked 9th in the world, Houdini has gone from Circus performer at Coney Island to a World Wide Act. Monk Eastman has given up his villainous ways and became a pet shop owner with Thomas Edison and a surprise teammate. The team doesn’t know why it’s been summoned but seems to be coming together.
Rough Riders: Riders on the Storm Issue 1 is well written if you have never read a Rough Rider comic you can jump in and pick up the story and if you’re a fan of the previous volume there is enough to satisfy you. It’s amazing to see where the team ended up and how they are getting back together. Every time I read Rough Riders, Adam Glass hits how I Imagine each person would have acted in real life. I am interested to see where this conspiracy will take the team and who is behind it.
The artwork is brilliant, and a person feels like history unfolding with each page. Patrick Olliffe art is the perfect complement to Adam Glass’s story. Patrick Olliffe’s art mixed with Gabe Eltaeb’s colors and Sal Cipriano’s letters make Rough Riders feel like a historical portrait coming to life. The comic has a cinematic feel which helps bring these characters to life.
