Geeky News: News you need to know for the Week ending February 3rd
Happy February! Time to celebrate President’s Day, Winter Vacation (for some public schools, anyway), and Valentine’s Day. Speaking of valentines – you know what we love? Geeky news! Here’s what happening in the film and television industries this week.
Batffleck: Though Ben Affleck is a great filmmaker, we’ve been pretty open about our concerns that he’s stretching himself too thin on the upcoming Batman film. That’s why we breathed a huge sigh of relief when we heard that Affleck is no longer directing Batman. Instead, he’ll be focusing on his performance and will also help produce the project. Finger crossed!
Runaways: Marvel released its cast information for Runaways, and it’s full of small name actors. This is great! Runaways appears to be a fresh start for a group of young actors (similar to how Gossip Girl, the project before this one for the series’ showrunners, was). We think this is a good sign. Plus, we love how diverse the cast is.
Power Rangers: Though the trailers for the March action film are looking better, the film can’t seem to escape behind-the-scenes drama. Max Landis’ script for the Power Rangers film leaked this week, and true to his claims a few months ago – it does seem like the studio copied his style and ideas. Of course, we don’t know for sure how closely they’re tied until we see the movie, but this is bad PR regardless!
Doctor Who: Peter Capaldi announced this week that he is stepping down from the role of The Doctor at the end of season ten. Season Ten is scheduled to end in 2017, so Whovians have several months to debate and decide who the new Doctor should be. With Steven Moffat leaving the show as well, this could be a big opportunity for the new showrunner (Chris Chibnall) to make his mark.
Emma Caulfield: Sunnydale’s favorite demon (kind of) will be joining Fear the Walking Dead’s third season. AMC has not yet revealed who Caulfield will be playing, but we don’t think it’s a character from The Walking Dead comics.
Teri Hatcher: The original Lois Lane is switching sides. Hatcher has been cast as a “major villain” for season 2 of Supergirl. The details of her casting are under wraps, but we’re sure they would waste Hatcher in a throwaway role.
John Wick: The sleeper hit that nobody saw coming, John Wick may be getting a prequel series in addition to the to-be-released film sequel. It most likely won’t include Keanu Reeves, but one can dream!
Sharknado: Was anybody asking for a fifth Sharknado installment? No? Too bad – there’s one coming to Syfy anyway. It will still star Ian Ziering and Tara Reid, along with many poorly-CGI’d sharks.
