Geeky News: What you need to know for the week 3/31/2017
Can you believe that 2017 is almost a quarter over? We haven’t even hit summer blockbuster season and we’ve had so much great film and television shows to watch! Looking for this week’s biggest hits? Here’s what you need to know going into the weekend – and no, none of it is an April Fools’ Day prank. (Pinky promise.)
THE BEST
Batgirl: It was announced this week that DC is developing a Batgirl movie, and the director attached to the project? None other than geeky cult favorite Joss Whedon. Yes, DC has a mixed track record of working with Batgirl (while her recent comic books are great, her role in The Killing Joke was atrocious) but Joss Whedon excels when he’s working with female super heroes. If anyone is going to make this amazing – it’s him.
CinemaCon: CinemaCon, the official convention for The National Association of Theatre Owners, was earlier this week. Theatre owners were treated to sneak peeks of upcoming films, like the Jumanji reboot, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Justice League, and other films for 2017. Many of these received rapturous applause, so we have reason to hope that this is a landmark year for movies.
Power Rangers: The nostalgia-heavy reboot did well at the box office last weekend, implying that there will be more movies down the road. The cast is already campaigning for a new casting twist – a female Green Ranger – which would be in line with the rest of the updates from the current film. Sign us up!
GLAAD: A follow up to the above story, GLAAD president Sarah Kate Ellis spoke to the press this week, praising the additional of LGBTQ+ characters to existing franchises. Ellis is quoted as saying that “LGBTQ youth deserve a happily ever after just like everyone else,” and we totally agree.
THE WORST
Ghost in the Shell: The long-awaited live action adaptation of the cult anime has arrived and it… is underwhelming. Whitewashing aside, the film doesn’t live up to fan expectations. Unless it breaks box office records this week (which is unlikely) this appears to be a one-and-done project for Scarlett Johansson.
STAR POWER
David Beckham: The athlete will be playing a role in Guy Ritchie upcoming King Arthur film, and he debuted his character’s facial scar this week. The result? A lot of confused social media followers. Eventually, however, they did admit that Beckham still looked really good.
Eddie Murphy: The acclaimed comedian is back! Murphy will be voicing a lead character in an upcoming animated film. No news as to what it is yet, but the story is said to focus on a young bull.
LOOK OUT FOR:
Change Agent: Netflix optioned a sci-fi novel called Change Agent this week. The story focuses on an Interpol agent who has suffered a “genetic attack,” leaving him looking like the cartel leader he’s supposed to bring down. The novel will be released on April 18.
