As we’re nearing the end of the year, we can’t help but be excited for the holidays and for all of the cool movie and television news we’re getting along with it! Technically, the holiday movie season doesn’t start for a few weeks, but with Doctor Strange’s release this weekend and the jaw-dropping Wonder Woman trailer to go along with it, we’re additionally stoked for everything we heard about this week.
Big Hero 6: While it’s no “Big Hero 7,” we’re glad that the Big Hero franchise is continuing with an original cartoon on Disney XD. The series was announced last March, but news broke this week that a majority of the film’s voice cast will be returning for the project. While TJ Miller and Damon Wayans Jr. will not be a part of the cartoon, Stan Lee, Alan Tudyk, Ryan Potter, and Andy Richter all will be.
Fantastic Beasts 2: A film franchise is in trouble when it’s getting bad press about a sequel before the first film is even released. It was announced this week that Johnny Depp would be a part of the second Fantastic Beasts film and Potterheads were very upset by the news. In light of the actor’s abusive behavior towards his ex-wife, fans believe that Depp has no place in a franchise that has helped many fans get over mental illness and other personal issues. Looks like Depp still has a rocky road ahead of him.
Starship Troopers: One of the best worst sci-fi films ever is getting a reboot. Yes, you read it right, the Robert A. Heinlein story is getting a new adaptation that will allegedly be closer to the original story. Social media is divided on this, since the story has a lot of themes that promote racism in no uncertain terms, and we’d much rather see original stories come to the big screen instead.
Deadpool: In a sign of solidary with Director Tim Miller, the composer from the first film (Tom Holkenborg, also known as Junkie XL) will not be scoring the sequel. He released a written statement, saying that the change in leadership “does not sit right” with him and walking away was a tough choice. Could trouble be brewing for the sequel?
Mille Bobby Brown: The internet’s coolest twelve-year-old will officially be reprising her role as Eleven on Netflix’s Stranger Things. Netflix hasn’t made the announcement official, but sources say that Brown will definitely be in the season – just not all of the episodes.
Lucifer: A sleeper hit television show, the DC Comics-inspired Lucifer got a back-nine order this week. This means that the show will run for a full second season. While it might not be the buzziest DC TV show on air, it has a strong fanbase and is well-liked by Fox executives, meaning that this show has a strong future.
THE KEEP-AN-EYE OUT FOR
Sonic the Hedgehog: The first film in Tim Miller’s post-Deadpool career will be… a family-friendly adaptation of Sonic the Hedgehog? It’s planned as a hybrid of live-action and computer-generated animation, but we can’t say we’re really excited to see this project move forward… only time will tell if it’s actually good.
