GEEKY NEWS: All the Geeky News you need to know for the Week ending 2/17
by Alexandra Wilson
Awww yeah, it’s almost President’s Day – the best day of the year!! Well, not really. All it means is that you get Monday off if you’re lucky, and if you’re not – you have to engage in some unfortunate political discussions. Distract yourself from that with the best geeky news about TV and movies! Hooraaaaay!
THE BEST
Avengers: Infinity War: Even though the movie is years away (and yes, I literally mean years), we got our first teaser for the film this week. There’s not a whole lot in it – but the things that were in it definitely piqued our interest. It almost made us forget that we have seven (!!!) Marvel movies before we actually get to see this threequel.
Archie: It looks like the premiere of Riverdale is considered a corporate success, because the company has just signed a development deal with Warner Brothers television. This means that many of the properties published by Archie Comics, like Sabrina the Teenage Witch, could potentially make it to television at some point. And yes, before you ask, I definitely want a dark, gritty Sabrina the Teenage Witch reboot.
THE WORST
Suicide Squad 2: Unsurprisingly, a sequel for the film is already in the works. Surprisingly, though, David Ayer is not partaking in the sequel. Though Warner Brothers currently has him developing a Harley Quinn-focused film, the studio is courting other directors for the sequel. Most notable on their list? Mel Gibson, who has received recent acclaim for his work on Hacksaw Ridge. I’m not sure if it’s possible for a second Suicide Squad film to be worse than its predecessor, but it looks like we’ll get to find out!
Hugh Jackman: It’s no secret that Wolverine has had a bad track record with cancer. For year, Hugh Jackman has had to undergo many treatments for skin cancer – though fortunately it is the lease dangerous iteration of it. A recent treatment inspired him to post a PSA to social media, inspiring younger viewers to use sunscreen and get regular check-up from your doctor. At least he’s doing good with a bad situation!
STAR POWER
Friar Tuck: Cult performer Tim Minchin is now set to pay Friar Tuck in the upcoming Robin Hood Origins film. He’ll be starring in the film with Taron Egerton (as Robin Hood) and Jamie Foxx (as Little John).
Mulan: The upcoming live-action adaptation officially has a director for the film. Niki Caro, best known for her 2002 film Whale Rider will direct Disney’s version of the story. Bill Kong will be executive producing.
Jed Whedon: After years of working on the show, Jed Whedon will officially direct an episode of the current season Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Hooray!
COMING SOON
Sam and Twitch: It looks like Kevin Smith is going to have a busy next couple of years! It was announced that Smith will be helming a TV adaptation for Sam and Twitch, serving as writer, director, and EP, for a BBC America television series.
