Surprise! There are more comic book publishers than just DC and Marvel, but you – dear reader – probably already knew this. Comic book culture is on the rise across the world, plus it’s already pretty popular, so it shouldn’t be surprising that characters and stories from other publishers is going to become popular as well.
We’re here to help you get ahead of the curve. One of the many mid-sized publishers of comic books, BOOM! Studios is full of comic books that you probably already love. Here’s an introductory lesson on BOOM!, as well as some recommendations as to what you should be reading.

History: BOOM! was originally founded as a production company – the company would option comic book projects and then develop them into feature films for studios. Eventually, the company segued into original publication. They first revived comic book publishing house Atomeka Press, and then began to work directly with veteran creators to print original series. In the mid-2000s, BOOM! inked a deal to print licensed comics for larger brands. BOOM! is best known for its mix of quirky original titles and licensed branded books.
Imprints: BOOM! has four comic book imprints. BOOM! is the core brand, KaBOOM! is for all ages, and BOOM! Box is the company’s experimental line that consists of projects made “for the love of it.” The fourth imprint, Archaia, is a continuation of Archaia Studios Press, which BOOM! Studios purchased in 2013.
Notable Books: Many of BOOM!’s original books have cult followings, like Supurbia and Irredeemable. The company prides itself on believing that comics are for everyone, so you’ll find youth-focused content with non-white male protagonists like Goldie Vance and Lumberjanes, which are just as popular as they are critically lauded. For licensed content, you’ll recognize BOOM! as the publisher of the Jim Henson Power of the Dark Crystal series, Adventure Time, and the ongoing Steven Universe series.
Notable Creators: The company focuses on creators with a large body of work, cult followings, and unique perspectives. Mark Waid was previously the company’s Chief Creative Officer before he returned to freelance work, and Noelle Stevenson helped put the brand on the map with Lumberjanes.
Future Projects: Many of BOOM!’s books have been optioned for film, including Lumberjanes, Irredeemable, and Empty Man.
What You Should Read: Because the publisher has a mix of cult favorite brands and unique original stories, there’s room for both on your pull list. Goldie Vance is a sweet mystery that all ages can enjoy, and Cullen Bunn and Vanesa R. Del Rey’s Empty Man is also a great read. Plus, Lumberjanes will brighten up any afternoon.
