“Pledged is Pledged”
Who would you pledge?-that is my question on my mind after reading the first five issues of Scott Snyder’s horror series Wytches. The story is an instant classic and only adds to Scott Snyder’s brilliant career in comic writing. Scott Snyder is one of my favorite authors, I started reading his comics with American Vampire, Swamp Thing and followed his Batman career with Detective Comics then to the Batman series they’re all excellent and well written. Scott is also one of the nicest guys who I have met several times at 4th world comics. Wytches adds to that impressive collection of Scott Snyder Stories.
The Story of Wytches is about a girl named Sailor who was being bullied but after an incident the bully disappeared and everyone questioning that Sailor was responsible for her bully’s disappearance. It turns out that that disappearance and others are caused by Wytches. Wytches are real who take people pledged and provide a benefit to a person who pledges someone to them. The Wytches do terrible things to the people who are pledged to them. Wytches have been doing this for centuries in the darkness never coming out to society. After the incident it seems someone has pledged Sailor and her family is in danger and this is where the story begins.
The writing is intense, reading this there is foreboding of danger and harm to the rook’s family especially Sailor. However the writing is not all doom and gloom we especially see glimpses of Sailor trying to be a normal teenager. Each issue has me anticipating what horrors await the rook family. After reading the first five issues I have come to care for the Rook family which makes you feel terrible for them and ask why this happening to them. I do have some questions like who pledged Sailor and who pledged Annie? Why is the Rook family being targeted? How much can Sailor the main character take? Are the Witches going to be exposed to society?
I have always been a fan of Jock’s artwork on this series and have been a fan of Jock’s artwork since the Black Mirror. It is nice to see Scott Snyder and Jock work together again. Here Jock’s artwork puts a face to the dangers that Sailor will be facing and only enhances the horror the family is facing. The way Jock draws the Wytches only giving glimpses and obscurities with a sense of gloom makes me frightened for the poor rook family through.
CHIT CHIT CHIT is the new KAKAKAKA KILL KILL KILL
Truth be told I am not a horror fan but Scott Snyder’s writing has made me one.
Again I am thankful to Scott for creating this and Image for putting this out.
The Geeked Gods ranking is 9 out of 10
